This was my first visit to St Lawrence’s home ground and as I arrived on a cold and windy afternoon I hoped that the rain would stay away, so that an entertaining game could ensue. As I arrived, the teams, with St Lawrence in sky blue and white striped shirts and Nomads Association in green and white shirts with green shorts, were taking a minute’s silence to honour an ex St Lawrence player, who had sadly passed away recently.

On 5 minutes, Nomads Association took the lead, when a shot from a corner squeezed itself under the keeper.
For most of the first half, the Nomads side had the wind behind them and the advantage of the slope. The game was closely fought, although Nomads created the clearer chances.

With just 3 minutes to go before half time, St Lawrence won a free kick on the edge of the box. A clearly hit shot struck the wall and bounced back and this coming just before the half time break, ensured that St Lawrence reminded Nomads they were well and truly still in this match.

St Lawrence had the wind and the slope, behind them in the second half. They launched attack after attack and yet could not get the crucial goal they needed, to level the match.

St Lawrence used the wind and the slope to their advantage and attacked solidly for 20 minutes without securing the equaliser they needed. The effort they put in to drawing level left them vulnerable to counter attack and on 65 minutes the Nomads Association team pulled two ahead with a fine headed goal following a corner.

Just three minutes later, a foul by the keeper in the penalty area gave Nomads the chance to go three up.
Even with the game at 0-3, St Lawrence would not concede and continued to push into the final ten minutes, for the consolation goal they deserved.
Sadly their efforts did not bring a reward today and at the final whistle Nomads’ players walked away celebrating a win, that lifted them above St Lawrence, into second place in the table.

Hope you had a wee dram to keep the cold at bay:)
