Cobdown is the home of Greenways as well as that of K Sports, who play in the Southern Counties East Premier League. This was a Division 1 fixture and as ever in the SCEFL I went into the tie with the expectations of goals and excitement.

Greenways home is on the edge of Maidstone and Aylesford. The Cobdown Stadium has a 3G pitch and good floodlighting. The covered grandstand holds seating for roughly 100 and there was a loyal crowd, of around 48 people, in attendance.

Coming into the fixture it was clear that one of the teams would be securing their first league win of the season. Greenways are unbeaten having drawn their opening two games, whereas Kent Football United have opened with a draw and a defeat.

Greenways Tom Reardon scored twice against Bermondsey Town in his first game of the season. Kent Football United’s goals this campaign have come from Antonio Gonella and Ashley-Paul Robinson.

The heatwave looked to have finally begun to break, as the game kicked off. The air became noticeably cooler and clouds of an impending storm gathered. After some cautious early play from both sides, in the eighth minute, the Kent Football United keeper brought down a Greenways player in the box, despite it looking as if he was going wide of the goal. Simon Walton stepped up to drill the penalty home for Greenways, putting the home side 1-0 up.

The rest of the first half saw Greenways pushing hard to extend their lead, however at the break it was Kent Football United who came closest to scoring, with a rare attack, which saw a chance shot wide, when it would have been simpler to score.

The second half saw a more even balance with Kent Football United pushing throughout for an equaliser. Greenways defence held up well and neither side could capitalise on the chances that they did manage to create.

At the final whistle it was Greenways FC who secured the 1-0 victory and took the three points. Both sides showed they have the players to do well this season, but they will need to be more clinical in the final third to seriously threaten the top teams.

A hard fought game 🙂
