As the season raced towards its conclusion I came to watch the Kent County Inter Regional Challenge Cup Final between Guru Nanak FC and Stansfeld (O&B) FC. Today’s final was played at the home of Larkfield & New Hythe FC and as it was a final, attracted a loud crowd of 245.

Guru Nanak are managed by Daniel Gibbs and this season have finished third in the Kent County League Division 1 (Central and East). Their goals have primarily come fromLuke Pollard (29 goals), Daniel Holness (7 goals) and Luke Collett (5 goals).

Stansfeld (O&B) FC completed the 2023-24 season in 14th and relegation place from the Kent County League Premier Division. Manager Richard Gurney has relied this season on the goals of Aaron Walker (12 goals), George White (7 goals) and Alfie Moynes (5 goals). Today’s final gave Stansfeld the chance to win the Bill Manklow Cup to add some gloss to an otherwise disappointing season.

The first half was a cautious affair, with both sides exploring avenues and channels going forward, without ever getting really close to breaking the deadlock. The sun came out as the half wore on and the heat began to play a part, with players slowing, as the half time whistle approached. At the break the teams went in with the game still tied and goalless.

The second half continued with first Stansfeld (O&B) FC going close and then two good chances for Guru Nanak FC.
Just when the game looked as if it would move into extra time, with 86 minutes on the clock, Stansfeld (O&B) FC created a first clear cut chance which saw the ball fired by their number 4 into the corner of the Guru Nanak net.
Guru Nanak FC threw everything into trying to claw back a goal. However the Stansfeld (O&B) FC defence held strong, as they had throughout the game. At full time it was Stansfeld (O&B) who took the trophy, providing a positive end to what had been a difficult season. For Guru Nanak FC there was simply the consolation of knowing they had given everything on the pitch and made an entertaining and hard fought final.
