Glebe FC v Kennington FC – Saturday 16th September 2023 – Foxbury Avenue

I had arranged to meet my wife up in London later today, so chose a big tie in the Southern Counties East Football League (SCEFL) where the top side, Glebe FC, were at home to Kennington FC, who currently occupied the bottom place.

Glebe FC, managed jointly by Danny Oakins and Craig Nelson, have made a great start this season, winning five and drawing two of the opening seven games. Their goals have come from Jamie Philpott (5), Ali Fofanah (4) and Malachi Morris (4).

Glebe had no team sheet but I was told the squad was the same as this from their last match.
Matchday Programme

Some big wins against promotion rivals Whitstable Town , VCD Athletic and Tunbridge Wells, have been secured but today they would have been keen to avoid a slip up, in a game that many would have expected them to win.

Kennington FC, managed by Dan Scorer, have had a torrid start to the season, with four defeats and just one point from a tie at Punjab United, to show for their opening five games. their start hasn’t been helped by the fact that they have played their first six games away, as their home ground, which they share with Ashford United, undergoes improvements. Finlay Dent has top scored for Kennington, with two goals. Kennington came into the tie desperately looking for a win, to take them off the bottom of the table.

As early as the 4th minute the home side were 1-0 ahead, when goal machine, Jamie Philpott broke free and drilled the ball into the back of the Kennington FC net.

1-0

Glebe dominated for the next 25 minutes, but out of nowhere Kennington were awarded a spot kick, for a late foul in the Glebe penalty area, which allowed Ryan Philpott to equalise at 1-1, after 30 minutes.

1-1

On 38 minutes Kennington were ahead. Ryan Philpott broke and finished for his second goal, like Michael Owen in France 1998, to make it 1-2 and provide Kennington with a lead which looked very unlikely until the penalty award.

1-2

At half time the sides went in with visitors still ahead 1-2. Glebe would play with the slope in the second half so there was definitely a lot still to offer in this game.

The second half began with 25 minutes of relentless Glebe pressure before a foul on Jamie Philpott led to a Glebe penalty which Philpott got up and finished to make it 2-2.

Red Card

Almost immediately Glebe’s Marcel McDonald was dismissed after an off the ball altercation. A game which had swung one way then the other still appeared to have twists to come.

Despite ten minutes of additional time and wave after wave of Glebe pressure, the ten men could not score again to clinch the result. At fulltime it was bottom side Kennington FC who stole a point from the previously top of the league team. This was a great advert for attacking football and the players all gave their all on a warm afternoon.
